Answer Engine Optimization: Show Up in AI

6 min read

This is the hands-on half of showing up in AI answers: how to write and structure a page so a tool like ChatGPT or Perplexity can lift a passage from it and cite you. The broader picture, covering every AI answer engine and how they rank sources, is in generative engine optimization. Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the narrower craft: making each section a clean, self-contained answer an AI can quote. The honest news for a small business is that this is not a separate skill from SEO. It is good SEO, written so answers lift out cleanly.

The honest news for a small business: AEO is not a separate discipline from SEO. It is mostly good SEO, pointed at a new surface.

I am saying that plainly because the web is full of people selling "AEO services" as if it were a secret new skill. Google itself says otherwise. Let me clear up the terms, show how AEO, GEO and SEO actually differ, and give you a checklist you can run yourself.

What this post covers

What AEO is and who it is for, a clean AEO vs GEO vs SEO comparison, how answer engines pick a source, a practical AEO checklist, FAQ content as an AEO asset, how to check if you are cited, and an FAQ.

AEO vs GEO vs SEO: the difference, cleared up

These three terms are muddled everywhere, so here is the clean version, drawn from Semrush's September 2026 guide and Google's own guidance.

  • SEO (search engine optimization): rank high in search results and features. Shows up on Google and Bing results pages, featured snippets and local packs.

  • AEO (answer engine optimization): be the direct answer an AI gives. Shows up in AI answers and citations in ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants.

  • GEO (generative engine optimization): be cited and mentioned inside AI-generated summaries. Shows up in AI Overviews and AI Mode, often as a brand mention.

The lines blur because the same signals feed all three. Semrush puts it well: AEO extends SEO rather than competing with it. The work that earns a domain Google's trust is the same work that makes it worth citing in an AI answer. If you want the Google-specific side of this, how to rank in Google AI Overviews covers it in detail.

And here is the part worth tattooing on the wall, straight from Google Search's own documentation: optimizing for generative AI search is, from Google Search's perspective, optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO.

Google adds that its AI features run on its core Search ranking systems, so ranking well in normal search is what makes you eligible to appear in its AI answers. In other words, you do not chase AEO instead of SEO. You do SEO well, and structure your content so answers can be lifted from it.

How answer engines pick a source

AI answer tools do not read your whole page and quote it. They retrieve passages from pages they already trust, then stitch an answer. Two things decide whether that passage is yours:

  • Trust. Semrush's own research found AI tools lean heavily on authoritative domains with strong backlinks and brand mentions, and they often pull a deep subpage from a trusted site rather than the exact top-ranking URL. For a low-authority Indian site, this is the honest hard part: trust is earned slowly.

  • Extractability. Within a trusted page, the AI picks passages it can lift cleanly. A section that opens with a short, complete answer is far easier to lift than one that buries the point in paragraph four.

So AEO is two jobs. Build trust over time (the slow SEO work). Make each answer easy to extract (the fast, in-your-control work). This post focuses on the second, because it is what you can do today.

The AEO checklist

Run this on any page you want cited. It is drawn from Semrush's extractability guidance and Google's own content advice, and it pairs with the basics in the on-page SEO checklist that works in 2026.

  1. Lead each section with a short, direct answer. Keep the first sentence under about 40 words, and make it stand alone, with no "it" or "this" that only makes sense alongside the rest of the paragraph.

  2. Use question-style headings. A heading phrased as a real question, answered immediately below, is easier for an AI to match to a user's prompt than a vague heading like "Key considerations".

  3. Keep entity names consistent. Call a thing the same name every time. Switching between "Google Business Profile", "GBP" and "your Google listing" makes it harder for an AI to connect your mentions to one thing.

  4. Write genuinely original, first-hand content. Google's guidance is explicit: unique, non-commodity content with a real point of view influences AI visibility more than any trick. A first-hand take beats a summary of what everyone else said.

  5. Add clear author information and credentials. Who wrote this and why they can be trusted is a signal both AI and readers use.

  6. Structure cleanly with real headings, short paragraphs, ordered lists for steps and bullet lists for related items.

  7. Keep it current. AI tools prefer recent, trustworthy pages. Update the facts, not just the date, when things change.

  8. Build ordinary authority: useful content that earns real links and genuine brand mentions. This is the slow part, and there is no shortcut.

FAQ content is an AEO asset

A well-built FAQ section is one of the most useful AEO moves a small business can make, because it mirrors exactly how people ask AI tools questions. Each question is a prompt someone might type; each short answer is a passage an AI can lift.

To make an FAQ work for AEO:

  • Use real questions people ask, taken from your customers, from Google's People also ask and from autocomplete.

  • Answer each in two to four plain sentences, the answer first.

  • Keep the wording of key terms consistent with the rest of the page.

  • Make the FAQ real, visible content on the page, not hidden markup. Google is clear that you do not need special AI files or markup tricks to appear in its AI answers.

What you do not need to do

Google published a useful mythbusting list, and it saves you money. You do not need:

  • LLMS.txt files or other "special" AI markup. Google Search ignores them.

  • To chop your content into tiny chunks for AI. Google's systems understand a full page.

  • To rewrite content in a strange "AI-friendly" style. Write for people, clearly.

  • To chase inauthentic "mentions". Google's systems favour genuine quality, not manufactured buzz.

If an "AEO expert" is selling you any of those, keep your money.

How to check if you are cited

You cannot force an AI to cite you, but you can check whether it does:

  • Ask the AI tools directly. In ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Mode, type the questions your customers would ask about your topic or category, and see whether your business or page appears in the answer or its sources.

  • Repeat it every few weeks. AI answers change, so treat this as a regular check, not a one-off.

  • Watch for referral traffic. Some AI tools send clicks; check your analytics for visits from AI sources.

  • Be patient and honest with yourself. On a low-authority site, you will not appear overnight. The route is the same slow trust-building that wins normal search, plus the extractable structure above.

FAQ

What is answer engine optimization?

AEO is the work of getting your content chosen as the answer by AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features, by writing clear, answer-first content from a trusted source, structured so an AI can lift and cite it.

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap. AEO is about being the direct answer an answer engine gives; GEO is about being cited or mentioned inside AI-generated summaries. Google treats both as part of optimizing for its search experience, which it still calls SEO.

How do I optimize for ChatGPT and Perplexity?

Build genuine authority over time, and structure each page so answers are easy to lift: short answer-first openings, question-style headings, consistent entity names and real, original content.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Google states that optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and its AI features run on its core ranking systems. Strong SEO is what makes you eligible to appear in AI answers.

What content gets picked as an answer?

Short, clear, self-contained answers on trusted pages. AI tools lean on authoritative domains and lift passages they can quote cleanly, often from deep subpages rather than only the top-ranked URL.

Does FAQ content help AEO?

Yes, when it is real visible content. FAQs mirror how people ask AI questions, so a question with a short direct answer is easy for an AI to match and lift.

How do I check if an AI tool cites me?

Ask the tools the questions your customers would ask and see if you appear, then repeat every few weeks and watch your analytics for AI referral traffic.
