Google Ads or Facebook Ads: Which for You
Google Ads or Facebook Ads: Which for You
Pick Google Ads when people already search for what you sell. Pick Facebook Ads, which run on Facebook and Instagram, when your product sells by being seen or when people do not yet know to search for it. That is the whole decision in one line.
Google Ads vs Facebook Ads is not about which is better; it is about which matches how your customers find you. Most small businesses start with one, prove it works, then add the other.
I have run both for Indian small businesses over the years, and the mistake is almost always the same: picking the platform a friend recommended instead of the one that fits the business. A dentist and a fashion label need opposite choices. This post gives you the real difference, the cost picture in rupees, and a decision table by business type so you pick the right one first.
The short answer
Choose Google Ads if people type searches like "AC repair near me" or "CA for GST filing", so the need is urgent and specific. Choose Facebook and Instagram ads if your product sells visually, like clothing, food, decor or courses, or if demand has to be created because people are not searching yet.
Many businesses end up on both, but starting with the one that fits, proving it, then expanding is smarter than splitting a small budget across two from day one.
How the two platforms actually differ
The core difference is intent versus discovery.
Google Ads (search) | Facebook and Instagram ads | |
When your ad shows | When someone searches for it | While people scroll, by interest, age, location |
The person is | Already looking for what you sell | Not looking yet; you catch their attention |
Best for | Urgent, high-value needs: repairs, clinics, legal, education, B2B | Visual or impulse products: fashion, food, beauty, decor, events, courses |
Ad formats | Text ads, call and location extensions, Maps, Shopping, YouTube | Photo, video and Reels, with WhatsApp, call or message buttons |
What does the work | Matching the right search with a relevant ad | The creative; the first two seconds of a video decide everything |
This intent-versus-discovery split is the frame used by recent Indian marketing sources, and it holds up. Google catches demand that already exists. Meta creates demand that does not. Neither is universally better.
Cost in India
Both run on auctions, and both let you set your own budget, so there is no fixed price. What matters is how you are charged and what you compare.
On Google, you set an average daily budget. The platform may spend up to twice that on a busy day, but over a month you are never charged more than 30.4 times the daily amount, per Google Ads Help. So a ₹300 daily budget is roughly ₹9,000 a month at most.
You also set a maximum cost per click, and you often pay less than it, only what is needed to hold your position.
The number that matters is not cost per click. It is cost per enquiry or cost per sale. A ₹40 click that becomes a booking beats a ₹4 click that never calls. Judge both platforms on what a customer costs you, not what a click costs.
On reach, India is one of the biggest audiences anywhere: Statista put India as the largest Instagram market at about 480 million users as of October 2025, per the Retales source. That scale is why Meta can find niche audiences cheaply. It is also why the creative matters so much; you are interrupting a scroll, not answering a search.
Which fits your business
Start with Google Ads if people already search for your service with clear words, if each customer is worth a lot (clinics, real estate, B2B, education), and if you serve a fixed area and want phone calls.
Start with Facebook and Instagram ads if your product looks good on camera, if you sell online across India, if you are launching something people do not know to search for, and if you want followers and repeat buyers rather than one-time leads.
Before you spend on either, fix the basics: a Google Business Profile, a page that loads fast on mobile, and a phone or WhatsApp that someone answers within minutes. Ads only bring people to the door. If nobody answers, the money is wasted whichever platform you chose.
A rupee budget split if you only have a small budget
If your budget is small, do not split it in half across both platforms on day one. Each needs enough spend to gather data, and a half-budget on two platforms learns nothing on either.
Put the whole budget on the platform that fits (use the decision above), run it for three to four weeks, and set conversion tracking so you can see cost per enquiry. Once that one platform is bringing customers at a cost you can live with, then take a slice of a slightly larger budget and test the second platform. Prove one, then add the other.
Here is a simple first-month plan that works for either: week one, pick one platform and one offer and set up conversion tracking (calls, forms, WhatsApp clicks); week two, launch two or three ad versions on a small daily budget; week three, pause what brings no enquiries and move budget to what does; week four, work out cost per enquiry and cost per sale, then decide whether to scale or add the second platform.
Can you run both
Yes, and many businesses eventually do, because the two play different roles. A common pattern: Meta ads create awareness and bring people who did not know you, and Google Ads catch them later when they search your name or category. But that is a stage-two move. Run it once you have one platform proven and a budget that can feed two without starving either.
On a small budget, do not split across both platforms. Put it all on the one that fits, prove it for three to four weeks with conversion tracking, then add the second from a bigger budget.
FAQ
Is Google Ads or Facebook Ads cheaper in India?
Neither has a fixed price; both are auctions where you set the budget. The honest answer is to compare cost per enquiry, not cost per click. The right platform is the cheaper one for your business because it matches how your customers find you, not because its clicks are cheaper.
Which is better for a service business?
Usually Google Ads, if people search for the service with clear words, like "plumber near me" or "GST filing CA". High-intent, urgent needs suit search. If the service is discovered visually, like a salon or a studio, Meta can work too.
Which is better for an online store?
Usually Facebook and Instagram ads, because products sell by being seen and the audience is huge in India. Google Shopping and Search also work when people search for the product by name, so stores often end up on both once one is proven.
How much budget do I need for each?
Enough to gather real data on one platform, which for most Indian small businesses means a few hundred rupees a day for three to four weeks. Do not split a small budget across both at once; prove one first.
Can I run both at once?
You can, but on a small budget it is better not to. Each platform needs enough spend to learn. Start with the one that fits, prove it, then add the second when your budget can feed both.
Which works faster?
Google Ads often brings enquiries faster because the person is already searching with intent. Meta can take longer to find the right audience and creative. Either way, give it three to four weeks before judging.
Which is better for leads?
For direct, high-intent leads, Google Ads usually. For building an audience and creating demand that turns into leads later, Meta. Match it to whether people are already searching for you.
